New Year's Day
New Year's Favorite – Galette des Rois

A traditional French holiday, the Epiphany, falls on January 6th when the three kings arrived to honor the newborn Christ child. Today, French families still gather around the table together to enjoy a special cake: la Galette des Rois, or the Kings' Cake. Becoming more popular as a tradition for good luck in the coming year, not just at home but in offices and parties, the Galette des Rois at St. Honoré Boulangerie arrives with a lucky charm made of porcelain and a golden paper crown.
The Galette comes in many different designs, but at St. Honoré the design is the traditional sunflower shape to symbolize vitality. Our cake is hand-crafted and baked to order using Shepherd's Grain's flour and top-quality, locally-produced butter.
Enjoy this product at room temperature, or warm it up to get the best possible flavor.
Should you choose to follow French tradition, you may insert the porcelain figure from the bottom side of the galette before slicing it. Whoever ends up with the slice with hidden porcelain figure becomes the King or Queen for the day, and wears the golden paper crown. Please use caution to find the porcelain figure with your fork, especially when serving to young children.
One size serves 10 to 12. $42. Available December 26 to January 31. Please order at least three days in advance by calling 503.445.4342 (Thurman) or 503.496.5596 (Lake Oswego).
