May 16th is Saint Honoré Day, which is a day to celebrate the Patron Saint of baking in France. Every year, we host a special event to celebrate the day to share this French tradition of St. Honoré day, and to show our appreciation to our customers who have been supporting St. Honoré Boulagerie. Please bring your friends, sit back and enjoy the evening with us!

  • This year, our celebration will include:
  • French jazz performed by Heather Keizur accompanied by Emmy-award winning composer Vince Frates on piano.
  • Alsatian Tarte Flambée (thin-crust flat bread with crème fraiche sauce and various savory toppings), baked to order in our clay brick oven.
  • A special cheese sampler platter that comes with a glass of wine to pair with. We will offer tasting of wines from different regions of France to choose from.
  • Special Saint Honoré pastries including Lychee Raspberry Saint Honoré and Chocolate Saint Honoré, in addition our signature pastry Saint Honoré.

Saint Honoré of Amiens - Patron Saint of Bakers

As the legend goes, a young man named Honoré became the Bishop of Amiens in 554. When it was known in his hometown that he had been proclaimed bishop, his nursemaid, who was baking bread for the family, refused to believe that Honoratus had been elevated to such a position. She remarked that she would believe the news only if the peel she had been using to bake bread put down roots and turned itself into a tree. When the peel was placed into the ground, it was transformed into a blackberry tree that gave flowers and fruit. This miraculous tree was still being shown in the sixteenth century.

During his service a number of miraculous events occurred, which spared farmers, millers, and bakers from natural disasters. Residents of France connected the miracles with Bishop Honoré and in 1204 a Parisian baker built a chapel to commemorate him. Today, the chapel is no longer standing, but the name, Saint Honoré, is etched in a gate leading to Faubourg and Rue Saint Honoré in the heart of Paris. Dominique Geulin has placed a statue of Saint Honoré next to the claybrick bread oven in his boulangerie.
